Hi, I'M MARY.

A Child’s View from the Foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge

I was the youngest of 13. We didn’t have much, but we had each other—and we had hope. Every step I took to school, I was walking toward something bigger. Even when I was afraid, I knew education would open doors. And one day, my quiet steps would lead me to the bridge.”
